Let's see - narcissists, loners, hipsters, lesbians, gays, adult children liviing on their parents credit cards and hippies who couldn"t get anyone to buy their pottery or beads in a normal neighborhood.

Got it.

Thanks for the heads up on these "wonderful" neighborhoods.

Although I live in St. Petersburg, FL, I'm not that far from Tampa; Harbor Island is beautiful, but talk about KA-CHING who could afford kids too - LOL!

"East Austin was a neighborhood of poor and working-class black and Latino families. But between 2000 and 2010, dramatic change took place: Increasing numbers of single and childless whites and Asians moved in..."

Seems a little racist to me...

he only thing that i see in here is that the quote " East Austin was a neighborhood of poor and working-class black and Latino families. " which it ofends me since i'm a child-free and wanna stay that way latina, so makes look like all latinos and black people reporduce like rabbits... clearly the person who wrote this has never being outside of the u.s., however... that quote makes me feel like even if i move there i would never be accepted, ... and yeah not having children is the new IT of the time, heck all that money for children's college turns into uncontable traveling for me and my husband

you people amaze me. you complain about everything and call them comments.  Grow up and take care of yourselves and keep your negative comments about everyone else to your selves.

It seems to me that's its always been people with kids that made people without kids feel like second class citizens so now maybe this prejudice is starting to get some attention. Even within a family with siblings the one who chooses to remain single without kids is seen as somehow less important and the disadvantges of choosing to go it alone are never considered, but the disadvantages of those having kids should excuse them from all other responsibilities. They will say well what problems can you have? you have no kids, so no wonder we see a backlash

I don't believe these!  If the median house value is over $500,000. how can people with an average income of less than $34,000. afford them.  There are some things in these articles that don't make sense, with a major difference between home value and what I assume is the average income.

Can anyone explain this?

Yes, we who are child-free are somewhat self-indulgent and self-absorbed and as a 40-something

single, it seems that single women in these neighborhoods are more inclined to enjoy their cigarettes

and are generally less up-tight than single moms.  Even tthough, anti-smoking regs are more prevalent, we smokers who are child-free don't have to worry about being a bad example!!!

The actual word is "childfree" not "childless". This article is about people who have made a choice not to have kids...the word childless implies a desire but inability to have kids. The new trend is completely different. We choose to remain childfree because it isn't necessary to continue to increase a species that is overwhelmingly overpopulous.

And Some of these places look like nasty "wanna-still-be-in-college" neighborhoods for a bunch of people to shake up and bunk up like rabbits. No. Thanks.

I don't see these neighborhoods remaining that strong & prosperous. You can only live on your own for so long before age catches up to you. Soon we all become old and weak and need someone else to whip our b*tts. And I'm sure the neighbors are going to want to help you out. Looks like everyone will be headed to a nursing home around the same time.

Thank you all for pointing out the discrepancies in the Austin, Texas, slides! We're looking into them, and we'll repost the slides as soon as we get to the bottom of the issue.
