So proud of my home town of Chincoteague VA.

I know it is one of the happiest places I have ever been.

It is very low key,a safe and quiet place to take a family or just get away for rest and renewal!!!

Another meaningless article from MSN.

Jesus Christ, MSN is still running this "article?"  I've noticed the webiste has really gone down hill over the last couple of months and they just repost the same old stories.  They have undoubtedly lost a lot of viewers since they stopped people from commenting on most of their articles.  I used to check several times a day now it's once every 2-3 days.  Hopefully they will fold.

To the "Coastie" who thought that the coast was only on the Atlantic and Pacific...Check with the U.S. Coast Guard stationed at Chicago, Il.  They might have something to tell you.

Morro Bay & Pismo Beach California - Absolutely the BEST!

I just got back from a week in Folly Beach, SC and the folks there seemed pretty darned happy (and I have to admit that warm water is sweet, even with no waves). I have spent more than 40 of my 50 years surfing, and one thing I have noticed is that most people who live in beach towns are pretty happy to be there. Unfortunately they are often less happy to see a lot of you there.

BWAHHH.... Bolinas would only be happy if everyone other than residents were banned. I agree with the other posters, 'East Coastal' Living has always had a ridiculous bias away from California, and I subscribed to the magazine for years while living in California

My post was critical of Coastal Living and their predatory subscription tactics and it was DELETED!

I don't know how they missed Portsmouth, New Hampshire.  The town is a picture post card from one end to the other with quaint 17th, 18th and 19th century neighborhoods as well as an interesting and walkable town center filled with unique shops and small restaurants.  Take it from me, someone originally from Virginia where I currently reside, I loved living in Portsmouth and would gladly spend summer and fall there if only time and distance allowed.

USED TO THINK LIVING BY THE OCEAN WAS THE BEST,
UNTIL THE BIG WAVES HIT JAPAN.  AN EARTHQUAKE CAN
STRIKE ANYWHERE, CAUSING THOSE MASSIVE WAVES
WHICH CAN WASH AWAY ANY COASTAL TOWN.

Newport RI….home of rich, white, arrogant snobs.  They're not happy - they're entitled asshats.  Another lame, unresearched MSN "article" of absolutely nothing.  Living on the east coast for years, I can attest to the fact that NONE of the beach towns on the east coast even remotely compare to the west coast.

No west coast? I have been to most places mentioned and east coast sucks. Last time I read coastal mag.

Hmmmmmm... Any article about the 10 happiest coastal living spots that does not include Carmel-By-The-Sea, or  Mendocino, both in California, is an incomplete article... !

I thought to be a coastal town you would be expected to actually be on the coast and not a lakeside. I guess all those years in the Coast Guard I was mistaken in my definition of "coast".

Of course they're happy towns---in order to be able to afford to live there you pretty much have to earn a small fortune, even in Michigan!

If 'happy' means inebriated, my vote would be Tybee Island, GA.  Great place, but I've never been in a more alcohol fueled environment.  And that includes New Orleans!

I'm sure these are all nice places, but Key West is the happiest seaside town on earth! Nothing else even comes close. I grew up a few miles from Watch Hill, RI and it is absolutely beautiful, but when it comes to a happy little beach town, Key West is the top of the heap.

I can think of a whole lot better ones, but I won't say which so that they stay the way they are.

As usual, they leave many good choices off of the list :  Newport, Oregon - Long Beach, Washington - Port Townsend, Washington.   All of these are good towns with good infrastructure and a tourist base, all are fun for those who love the water.
