I live in Texas, in a city of 270,000. We have one of the lowest crime rates in the country, many city amenities, great schools and parks. We as a city have eliminated the dumb cops by requiring all police officer to have a baccalaureate degree. We are the second most conservative city in the country following Provo, UT. As a city, we are very diverse with many educated foreign immigrants. We have many very large Churches of various denominations, Synagogues and Muslim Temples.

The population is educated and wealthy but our property taxes are very high. In my circle friends we pay from the lowest $6,500 to $24,000 annually. This is a great community if not for the very hot summers. My pool is hotter than the showers I take. We are under constant water restrictions.

You will never find a dirty industry or heavy manufacturing nearby, we love our clean air. That said I’m thinking about moving to California or Oregon, I just came back from a six week vacation visiting both.

BLAHHH!  BLAHHH!  BLAHHH!! BLAHHH!!!!   For those of you who complains about the gorgeous island of Hawaii... first of take a look at your surroundings where you live and see if it  qualifies as one of the Top 10 happiest state, if so, then bring it on and boast your place where you live.  Therefore, if you don't have anything to talk about ... then, let's just say... your pocket is not deep enough to absorb the cost of a plane ticket to Hawaii. Sorry, dude..in this planet  life is meant for happiness not for loneliness.

Washington made the list? What a joke! I have lived there for 41 years, and I have found it to be the most depressing place. With the constant grey skies and cold rain, it's enough to make anyone crazy. Everything gets mold and mildew and your lucky to get a decent summer with no rain. I've heard Washington has a high suicide rate. I'm glad to finally be living in southern Cali!

This has to be a joke. As some others here have alluded to, Hawaii is a 3rd world place(s), welfare oriented, meth addicted state, crooked cops,  with many of the people practicing   the "island ethic", ie laziness and anger, their primary stance. Look at it this way: their high schools have a "Beat Down a Haole Day" as an official celebration. The humorous thing about it is they want all people from the "continent" (no, not the "mainland") to clear out, give the residents the state back as their own country. There is a strong separatist movement on most of the islands (if not all), and I'm all for it. Give it back it back to 'em, they'll run the place into the ground within 10 years, divide up into the old native classes and start eating each other, not to mention the non true islander classes (Japanese, Phillapinos, etc) again. Yes. The true Hawaiians were cannibals once; not too long ago. Gives you a clue.

I almost forgot about Kauai is the testing ground for GMO! schools next to fields of poison. something you don't see in the news is how many sick children there are. The people that work for these companies, are mostly form mexico and texas. some are local residents. They had no jobs before these poison companies came along. cancer rates and other thyroid type issues are huge..

Hawaii? the truth form a person that lives here, works here, children went to school here. Crime, drug, homeless, jobless, education. huge issues with teen suicides and pregnancies. The need for a youth facility on Kauai, and people say not in my back yard. But drug use continues to rise and crime on the garden isle is growing. so is the need for more police to deal with domestic violence and the homeless. so in a nutshell, small island, few jobs, not much to do. teens turn to drugs or booze. many turn to crime to get money. The rich are buying things for the rich. The tourists come and go.................

I lived in Maui 4 years, it's not as expensive as people think and the quality of life is above average. If you have a girlfriend there you never break up you just lose your turn.

Hawaii... Not certain, but isn't that the state most dependent on Federal Government funding?  And it has the greatest number of citizens living on State and Federal assistance programs?  And I think it has a ton of other social problems lurking underneath off the tourist path.  Seems to me it has big bunch of rich people, bunch of service industry low paid people, some middle class, and then a ton of people who just could give a crap about anything but getting their next can of SPAM.  I think.  And Maine and a few more of those were just targeted by the Obama administration to be the main focus of his new congressional bills aimed at forcing minorities to move into those states and rural areas.  That should knock them down a few notches in a decade or two.  Last two times they did it was through housing projects, and tax incentives.... this time they are forcing zoning laws.... should be lots of fun.

this seems to be a list of the least diverse states in the country.  why no states with significant percentage of minorities?

So basically this was written by an environmental stand point.

I'd love to live in Hawaii, but I can't afford to move.

Hollywood has ruin the american culture, people  want the same lifestyles that their star actors or actress have. The gun is an american toy, killing is the way of life. There is no God, and money is all that matters. Racism is the norm, lying, and stealing is the way to winning. The pro athletes tell us to only play for the big money, use steroids, and commit adultery. This is what American life is all about.  Do whatever you want, as long as it feels good to you. "Lose your virginity, be gay & happy, whatever makes you feel good." Stealing is ok, just don't get caught, we are a society obsessed with hatred, money, and power. This is the land of Hell, welcome to happiness.
