Northern California your looking at 1300-2000 for a 1 bedroom apartment that is nothing special. A house 2500-5000 a month for rent. 98% occupancy means perfect credit to even get into a place. 1st month last month deposit, insane taxes, high utilities and highest per gallon gas in the country.

Yeah rent in Raleigh is not that low.  I have a two bedroom, one bath for 840 a month and that is not anything fancy.  If you look at the average rents in nicer/newer neighborhoods you are looking at over $900 a month for a one bed/one bath apartment and downtown it is 1200 easily for a studio.

If you find something cheap, it will be in the south or east part of Raleigh and the crime rate is much higher in those areas....

I live in Austin and am a renter.  This article is inaccurate.  The occupancy rate is 98%. The average price for a one bedroom/one bath is over $1,000 per month.  In addition, expect to have to have $100,000 is renter's liability insurance, pay for trash, pest control and water.

Utilities rates are very, very high.  I paid $125 last month for a/c and the rates are going higher.  Managements companies are now asking for 60-90 move out notices and you must agree to let the apartment be shown.  I live 10 miles from downtown where I work and spend about 2 hours a day on the bus.

For $1,000 a month, you can expect cheap fixtures, particle board cupboards and vinyl flooring.  There isn't a lot of affordable new building going on so apartment owners are "upgrading" and raising rents.  Expect a $100 to $200 at the end of every lease term.

Tucson has the lowest rents in the nation compared to mortgage payments. In other words, you save a lot of money in Tucson by renting instead of buying.
I live in marlinton wv. my rent has been $350 for years. the average rent here is about $400 TO$600
