These were the most expensive homes on the market in 2012, according to Trulia.com. They're not necessarily massive; some are spacious New York penthouses without enough square footage to qualify as a mansion. Most are still on the market.
We'll start with the No. 10 home, a penthouse priced at $60 million, and work up to the most expensive home of the year. One home has a swimming pool lined in 24-karat gold. Another is on 90 acres of untouched California land. One was designed by an award-winning architect; another employed master craftsmen to install custom features.

10. The Mark Penthouse
Price: $60 million
Location: New York

Size: 9,799 square feet
This full-floor penthouse at The Mark hotel on the Upper East Side was designed by French interior designer Jacques Grange. The apartment features a massive formal living room with 26-foot ceilings, a fireplace and a wet bar; the master suite has a dual-sided fireplace, sitting room, walk-in closets and his-and-hers master baths.
The apartment has a 360-degree view, and the ceilings are 10.5 feet high. There's also a conservatory with a custom staircase by Eric Schmitt, leading to 2,400 square feet of private outdoor space. Mark residents have access to the gym, salon and 24-hour room service by The Mark Restaurant by Jean-Gorges.

9. Mansion on Billionaire's Row
Price: $74 million
Location: Palm Beach, Fla.

Size: 20,129 square feet
This Billionaire's Row waterfront estate was built in 2011. It has vaulted ceilings, a wood-paneled office with parquet flooring, a marble grand dual staircase, multiple fireplaces and numerous terraces overlooking the water.

8. Tranquility on Lake Tahoe

Size: 38,000 square feet
The eight-building estate called Tranquility sits on 210 acres overlooking Lake Tahoe, but it also has its own private lake. The luxury compound consists of the main house, a conservatory, guest residence, art studio, boat house, gym with enclosed basketball court, stable and staff/guest quarters. There's also a 16-car garage and gate house, as well as a two-hole golf green.

7. Montana estate

This castle-like Shelter Island estate totaling 32,000 square feet of indoor space is located on the 24-acre Montana island of the same name in Flathead Lake, adjacent to Glacier National Park. Features of the property include a great room with 45-foot high ceilings and a second story gallery, a copper conservatory, and a windowed mahogany walk-in closet that's nicer than most people's homes. The mansion is crafted using Indiana and French limestone in numerous fireplaces, African mahogany, Italian plaster, copper and bronze.

6. Bradbury Estates compound
Price: $78 million
Location: Bradbury, Calif.

This compound, built in 2011, has never before been on the market. Located in the gated Bradbury Estates, the compound has city, canyon and ocean views. French limestone exteriors and hand-painted frescoes abound. There are two master suites; the chef's kitchen has a pizza oven and walk-in butler's pantry, as well as walk-in refrigerator and freezers. There's leather paneling in the poker room and oak paneling in the elevator, cherry wood floors and a custom-made forged iron chandelier. There's a 25-yard shooting range, a gun-storage room with safes, a 15-person Jacuzzi and a temperature-controlled trout pond with a two-story waterfall. The pool house alone is 5,716 square feet, and the guest house and garage total another 6,700 square feet.

5. Old-growth acreage
Price: $85 million
Location: Woodside, Calif.

Size: 9,000 square feet
The hefty price tag on this estate, which has never before hit the market, may be less attributable to the 1940s house itself and more owing to the three parcels of land that total 91 acres of beautiful property. With old-growth oaks and open meadows bordering Huddart Park, the painting-like grounds also include a gate house, a caretaker's cottage and a school.

4. Sherry Netherland penthouse
Price: $95 million
Location: New York

This is a full-floor, 15-room residence in the circa-1927 Midtown skyscraper Sherry Netherland, a luxury hotel. Five rooms and an approximately 600-square-foot western terrace overlook Central Park, and there are terraces looking south and north. As part of the Sherry Netherland, residents of this apartment will enjoy daily housekeeping and turndown service, as well as access to the fitness center, concierge staff, valet parking and room service from Harry Cipriani Restaurant.

3. City Spire penthouse
Price: $100 million
Location: New York

Size: 8,000 square feet
This Midtown penthouse sits more than 70 stories up, atop City Spire condominiums, with views of Central Park and the rivers. It was designed by Juan Pablo Molyneux, a member of Architectural Digest's AD100.
Visitors to this three-story property enter through a formal foyer with an inlaid marble floor, columns, closets and a powder room. A mahogany staircase connects the first and second floors. There's also a private, internal elevator serving each floor.
The grand master bedroom suite features green marble and mahogany in the bath, as well as a steam shower. Wrap-around terraces bring the total indoor-outdoor square footage to 11,000. A staff or guest apartment has a private entrance, which shares the floor with a wine cellar.

2. Ocean Drive mansion
Price: $100 million
Location: Miami Beach, Fla.

After a $25 million price drop, this Ocean Drive mansion is practically a bargain — except for its $100 million list price. Built in 1930, this house has hand-painted frescoes and an observatory. It would be difficult to find a more over-the-top feature than the courtyard's 54-foot, mosaic-tiled, 24-karat gold lined pool.

1. Fleur de Lys
Price: $125 million
Location: Los Angeles

Coming in at No. 1 is the mansion called Fleur de Lys in the Holmby Hills section of Bel-Air. The enormous home built by David Saperstein — now belonging to his ex-wife, Suzanne — has been on and off the market since 2007. The pair divorced soon after the mansion was completed, so this estate has hardly even been lived in. Listed among the estate's interested potential buyers was Petra Ecclestone, but it was off the market until the day she bought the Spelling Manor in the same neighborhood, after which Fleur de Lys relisted.
The house takes normal mansion amenities and supersizes them, so the garage houses nine cars and the screening room seats 50.
