If you want to do the upgrade because you want to enjoy your home and be there for years to come - good for your - do it!  However, if you aren't sure how long you're going to be in a home then you really should investigate how much the upgrade is worth to the value of your home so you don't waste your time and money.

AGREED!! I can personally attest that making the garage nice is NOT a bad fix for the money if you do it yourself. Every time I drive into mine, I'm happy all over again that I did it. It was a 2+ car garage with oily spotted, grimy floors and tape and bedded walls. The project included a wall of good metal shelving floor to ceiling for organizing everything, priming and painting the walls, a hot-tire garage floor and a small work area for my husband. 

The cost: $400 for shelving (from Home Depot), $150 for the floor (2 garage floor packages from Lowes); $75 in primer and paint and $250 for a cabinet area with a Formica top (again, Lowes). All are color coordinated and look fabulous. Hmmm, what is that? $875 plus 7 days on my own in labor working alone. Waiting for the products to cure properly before continuing is part of the timing. We have a lovely, organized garage. I think I can pull $875 out of that for the sale.

I found it very informative.  Additions I had thought of to make our house worth more just are not worth the cost at sell the home time.  I would love that sunroom for the remainder of the time we own our home though.

You know, I'm seeing a trend in these kind of articles where one might think that they are going to learn something and it just turns out to be advertisement for something. In this case I  would imagine that it is the books/reports that are the item. Also  I am amazed at the prices quoted. You can buy a whole house in the midwest for the prices quoted for a bathroom or sunroom addition.

What the hell is wrong with this writer??? What planet did he fell from???Talking about this kind of pricing, did He ever work in construction? specially now in this market, now days you get your framing done for$  2.75 to  3.00/ sq.ft.,sheetrock for 90-95 cents per sq.ft.smooth finish including material, tile instalation $ 3.50 /sq.ft and that is for marble etc. and so on.

I'm just finishing my remodel and I redeed everything tore down everything up to the studs, did new plumbing ,electrical, insulation sheetrock new kitchen cabinets granite countertop,  bathroom with marble and natural stone,second bathroom also high end, acacia hardwood         entire house ,new windows ,new furnace,new tankless water heater, new trimwork and interior doors,men i'm tired allready and for all the materials I spent under  $ 60,000.00. so dude if you want to write a good article get your head out of the clouds and do a research first.

This comes from the thinking that got us in this mess to begin with. I can build a 4000k sqft house for $100k Without appliances and so forth but the space itself. You guys know a large sheet of dry wall is about $7. Those $2k shower heads on diy network are about $350-400 at costco. 

All these quotes are for overpriced workers or some tv renovation. Just plan everything out find some closeout items maybe forego the led lights in the sink or the water-proof dicso speakers in the shower and your bathroom wont be the price of a mid level luxury car

The writer is clueless as others have said. This was obviously written for upscale readers.  I put in a nice bathroom for $4000.

The reason everyone (including myself) is pissed off at this article if because the title of the article is 6 worst home fixes.  These are not fixes they are talking about.  I live in California and worked for a general contractor for 12 years.  The prices they're quoting are reasonable when you consider that these are all additions to your home with means the cost of blueprints, permits, foundation, etc.  and they are assuming we all remodel/add to our homes with the highest quality materials: granite, hardwoods, expensive energy efficient windows, etc.  I don;t take issue with the pricing but I do take issue with these BS titles that they use to lure us in.

That writer must be a member of the 1%.  He is totally clueless about the real world.  Before I retired I was a member of the 10% for awhile and even then I would never consider spending that kind of money.  I could do it for far less either doing it myself or managing my own contractors.

Yes! I bought a house so that I could make it to my liking, not spend all my time in it worrying about the re-sale value!

Also, my parents had a kitchen and 2.5 bathrooms totally re-done recently and they did not spend the amount of money that is being quoted. They hired a good company and got quality work but did not spend that amount of money.

Where on God's green earth did they come up with these prices!!! No wonder some people cant afford thier homes! I myself could do a lot of these prodjects on a thenth of the cost and have them turn out just as nice.

You are a genius if more people understood the concept you explained our country would not be in the mess were in right now.  I also agree the person who wrote this article is clueless on several different levels.  If the author wants me to prove my point let me know.

First off a home is not an investment.  A home is where you live.  So what ever you put in it is for you and no one else. If you want to add then do so.  If you don't own the home if you have a mortgage on the home you don't own the home.  You have a deed, but the bank is the landlord.  Take the money that you plan to spend to improve or add to the home to pay off the loan before you add anything to your home.   Pay the loan early in stead.  Home is an investment when you are not living in it.  If you had to borrow to buy your (Bank) home then you can't afford to add to it.   Don't think resale value if you do you maybe living out of your car.  Don't borrow the money to improve your home.  Reason is because you just got another landlord.   Also remember that a home has the same value as the home next door.  You may have a mansion, but if it in the middle of the slums your value is the same as the other homes in the slums.  You do not add to your home to resale.  Now if you have a buyer in hand they want to make a change then he or she can pay for it.

I agree with the other posts.

I also wonder what ever happen to making a home the way you like it because its your home.  Certainly people look at their house as an investment. Others look at it as their nice house.  Its seems most articles today are written as if your house is a mutual fund.

Whoever wrote this article ought to be beat with a rubber hose. It is misleading and only contains part of the facts. As a contractor we subscribe to Remodeling Magazine (RM). Once a year they do an issue called cost vs. value. It is a handy tool that describes return on investment for home improvements. This author neglects to tell you that the categories are broken down into low, mid and high end remodels with RM giving a detailed description of materials / quality for each . They also neglect to inform you it is based on region and city. Does one really think you would recoup 52.7% on a $232k bedroom remodel in destitute Detroit? Hell no!! Now in Lower Manhattan I am sure that return could be higher than 53%. Stupid article written by someone who was clearly out drinking to much the night before the deadline.
