Who writes this stuff?   Not arguing the Mississippi rating, but it is not a fact that the poorest counties have the least funding.  Facts are available on the MS department of education website under reports, children first, by county the per pupil expenditure is listed.  Some of the poorer counties have a higher sometimes up to two thousand dollars per pupil than the richer (Madison) counties.   Look it up MSN, do your homework!

We live on Guam and I am originally from Las Cruces, NM and I can tell you that there are good schools in New Mexico. Once again, it starts at home and the support must be from the parents first. I have a Masters degree in Special Education and my son is on track as a 9th grader to pursue a BA in aerospace engineering at NMSU Las Cruces. The tuition is paid by the state if the student maintains a 2.8 gpa and that is for the 4 years. There are may opportunities for students there, they just have to be supported by parents first and be willing to do the hard work of studying.

Best schools are in blue states, worst schools are in red states. That's...not good.

It is not about poverty, public schools give free education to all its students.  You can find many students around Latin America that cross rivers every day and travel very long distances to get an education, and with only a piece of pencil they achieve more than many other students in the US.  So it is more about the values they receive from their families and the desire for a better future.

Maybe if Louisiana teachers and staff worried more about academics and less about school dress code, and being hell bent southern power authorites , we would be on the "best" list. But the "good ole south" it will never happen. Fear the rulers!

What about California?  Per-student expenditure is among the highest, but most of it ends up in the hands of corrupt union fatcats.  Illegal aliens, legal immigrants with limited English proficiency and widespread poverty drive down test scores and academic performance.  Average class size is among the highest.  Teacher salaries are among the highest, but labour disputes are rampant and hinder performance, and teacher turnover is high.

How did Maryland make second best?  If they are rating private & charter schools with them, then that is what is probably saving their ranking.  I have been shocked at what passes for a good education in a public school in this state.  You won't do your homework...no problem!  Don't want to do your classwork?...no problem!  You still get A honor roll status....(this is not a joke or over exaggeration.  Very serious about this.).  I have been even more surprised at what it takes to fail a kid.  It is almost impossible.  Just because 78.6% graduated, doesn't mean 78.6% should have.

So why don't we see the destruction of schools in Democrat run places like Detroit and Washington D.C. mentioned here?  It is because the writer of this story had his liberal agenda and has no intention on doing anything other than to smear Republican states!  I am sure that there are many parents in Detroit who would LOVE to send their kids to schools in West Virginia!
idaho is the worst in the country.. wonder why it's not on here.

The state as a whole may spend that much on students but it's not broken down per district. North Jersey schools fare far better than south because that's where the money is and in South Jersey the wealthier communities are better as well.

I went to a public school that gave us off every time it snowed, an inch & and a 2 hour delay if it was below 32! THATS why I can't spell read or write, along with "check spelling" @ the bottom of this page.

And did some of you miss the fact that it is stated the money is not evenly distributed. It isn't any kind of rocket science or great discovery that a much smaller piece  of the pie goes to the poorest areas.

It is not always about money--Louisiana spends over 12,000 per student--near the 13,000 that several of the top states spend per student--I think it has more to do with the % of monorities that are often poor and come from single parent homes----Vermont is 95.4% white--Mississippi is 59% white--New Hampshire is 94% white--Louisiiana is 63% white--now before everyone jumps me about being a racist--let's look at some truly sad facts-- about 69% of blacks are born out of wedlock--(this number has been going down for blacks and up for Hispanics and whites)---A single parent can do a great job of raising a child but when you add that they are poor it becomes a up hill battle--sadly a big percentage of the single mothers in Mississippi/Ala/La  are black and poor--now in West Virgnia they are poor and white and have the same sad future--you want to blame someone you blame dead beat dads that are not there for their children or the babies mothers.  It is very not fair to compare a state like Vermont to Mississipi--I promise you if they would take all the politicains from Vermont and place them in Mississippi they could not do any better.

If you made current high school graduates take a 1970 SAT test, they wouldn't get into community college.
