How many times can your home fit in 1 Romney house?

Website's new calculator digs at presidential candidate's plans for an 11,062-square-foot summer home, on the site of his current $12 million California house.

© Lenny Ignelzi/APReportedly, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has a few dollars in the bank.

According to what seems to be the majority of media, he also is prone to spending that money — be it on companies, the world's most famous car-top pet tote or his latest potential purchase to draw attention: construction of an 11,062-square-foot "summer home," on the site of his current 3,009-square-foot beachfront house in La Jolla, Calif. He paid $12 million for the 18,000-square-foot property in 2008, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Today, real-estate brokerage Movoto answers America's most pressing question —"How many of my houses could fit in one Romney beach house?" — with this online calculator.

Post continues below

Reached by email, Nick Johnson, Movoto's content outreach coordinator, says the "Romneyize your house" blog post is part of the site's effort to "(keep) people informed about what's happening in fun and unique ways." According to Movoto and the National Association of Home Builders, Romney's planned abode could fit 6.5 average U.S. homes.

Although the Union-Tribune broke news of Romney's construction plans way back in August, it's had remarkable staying power. For starters, it brought the same "How many houses do you own?" question that John McCain faced on the campaign trail in 2008 (last count: four, though one of Romney's sons lives in one). Last week, reports that Romney said he would discontinue the mortgage-interest tax deduction for second homes also raised some eyebrows.

And then there's the La Jolla home's proposed car elevator; for the record, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt also had one, and his was in a secret train station below New York's Waldorf Astoria Hotel.

But let's cut to the chase.

President Barack Obama's house on the border of Chicago's Hyde Park and Kenwood neighborhoods measures 6,243 square feet, according to the Cook County Assessor's Office. Romneyized: 1 home.

Obama's current residence, at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, D.C., is 55,000 square feet.

Heres an idea.  Get an education.  Work hard. Accomplish something for yourself.  You can have Romney house too.  I am sick of this class envy crap pushed by the libs in this country.  EVERYONE who was born in North America in the last 60 years already won the lottery.  Quit wining, read some books, go out there and make your own way.  Quit worrying about what someone else has!!!

J-Blanco, you have a lot to learn, it seems that anyone who has went to college, not under a scholarship has been under the public or government dole. Due to having to repay the government for ASSISTANCE. So with that being said you're correct President Obama, did it the hard way and had student loans to repay, like the rest of those who have attended college. Maybe Mr Romney's college was paid in advance, but we all know that he didn't have to worry about repaying a loan after completing college. but he made those millions while in college. oh no that can't be correct because he was a citizen that was working for free as some of the other bloggers have said today.

Not to knock Mr Romney's wealth, i'm glad to see a gentlemen excel in this free country of ours, but what I don't appreciate is how some of you degrade the current president as if he caused this tremendous mess in less then four years.

he had nothing to do with the corruption of Lehman Brothers, the largest mortgages holders in the country, plus investments. he nothing to do with the corruption in Colonial Banks in Alabama with holding in Taylor Bean and Whitaker another mortgages giant that was seized by the government and owner imprisoned.

he also had nothing to do with all of the american people who wanted a piece of the American dream  and brought homes that the banks knew they could not  afford, with interest rates and balloon payments. But yes he did attempt to restart some of the banks who turned their bank on him.

He also helped the car industry that now is back. The homes can't be help because most of the people have walked away from them and took the hit on credit.

he wasn't the cause of 9/11, which hit our financial sector. It was like sticking a tiny pin into a heart. It was bound to stop the heart from working. How it happen, is the heart sent out blood in the form of soldiers to Afghanistan and Iraq, it pushed blood out in the form of recalling all its national guard recruits. it pushed blood into every area of the country to prevent any other tragedy of this account. the TSA/homeland security had money to dispose of any manner possible a open check. This again happen in 2001.

We are now in 2012 attempting to bring home the troops after 10 years of fighting in a battle that was worst then Vietnam. And the cost was astounding but yet and still this president is label as not stopping a war. An sometimes as his war and his cost.

He can't start one alone, how can he stop one alone?

The current government where not one republican is willing to assist in anything, yet I'm willing to guest that every single insured person with kids at the age of 26( Democrat, Republican/Tea Party, Independence) was placed back on their parents coverage.  I see that as being totally hypocritical when it was the Obamacare that stepped on your constitutional rights. To all of you stop being hypocrites and just accept that you have a president that believes in its people. All American people not just Gays/Lesbian, Asian, African American, Hispanic and the most vocal ones of you the Caucasians.

I don't beleive its the media that blowing this out of text. They also place atheletes, entertainers, directors, Oprah W, tigerwoods, his ex's home, Michael Jordans Walmart size home in Juniper Florida on line. Don't critize them for putting a presidential candidate home online that is also a millionaire just like this group. they are critized for the size of their homes daily by everyone. Now you have a presidential candidates that is putting together his run at the white house and all his supporters are saying its unfair to talk about his home. Who cares, what he owns or his wealth, we should only be concerned about if he will attempt to be for all of the people and not just some of the people.

The BUSHE`S in the WHITEHOUSE were both multi-millionares..neither one of them pulled our country out of debt but rather dug us a little deeper. Romney wil not save our country..probably bury us! The middle class will all but disappear as he and the other 1%ers fill their deep pockets.

Good for Romney, I have no beefs about him owing huge homes or many homes, HE EARNED THEM...so anyone who has a beef with him is probably jealous.

Hey, MSNBC let's talk about what Obummer was worth when he took office 3 1/2 years ago and what he is worth today.  Are we going to hold that against him???

The USA has not been sold. But CHINA has a 14 trillion dollar I.O.U. note they are holding of ours...kind of like the bank holding the deed to your home until it is paid for. To all those who are struggling to pay for your homes..keep up the good fight.(the 99%ers)

The 1% do not create jobs.  They invest global and buy up ALL oceanfront property around the world.  Time to take away their welfare, loopholes, deductions and tax gifts.  If they hide their money? Tax them.  If they invest in other countries? Tax them.  If they own more than 1 home?  Tax them.  If they have outragous luxuries?  Tax them.  Simple as that.  And end corporate personhood.  This is the biggest crime against America and Americans.  The supreme court judges must be out of their minds and evil to approve such outragous amendments to Our Constitution and elections.  Remove Cpacs.  AMERICA IS NOT FOR SALE.

Why is this so important????  I look at it this way.  Our country is so far in debt because of the overspending and lack of control with bailing out companies and giving money to failed companies.  If Romney has all this money, made this money through his hard work --  wow, what a great guy to have as a President.  He obviously knows how to handle a dollar so we need him in the whitehouse to get our country back on track

I don't own a home, and cannot afford to.  I envy the wealthy and would loooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee to be one of them.  Unfortunately, I did not inherit any money and have not had the skills/drive to build a fortune.  So, I don't begrudge what they have.

As others have said, Romney EARNED his money honestly. You notice that none of these media d-bags ever mention that he received a very large inheritance and GAVE IT ALL TO CHARITY. THEN he went out and succeeded on his own.

You can compare that to the Kennedys, whose patriarch amassed the family fortune through ILLEGAL means; bootlegging. That's how JFK was able to get elected to the President\cy - his father's connections in organized crime delivered the vote in Chicago and some other large cities.

And, of course, we shouldn't forget John Kerry. That gold-digging wh0re married into the Heinz food fortune. When he ran for President against Bush, ABC and CBS each mentioned his money ONCE. Naturally NBC ignored it completely. And HE is RICHER than Romney.

In the same timeframe, the three networks have discussed Romney's money TWENTY-SEVEN TIMES!

By the same token, the media and the Left have made a big deal out of Romney's small (for him) off-shore bank account, even though it's perfectly legal and ALL necessary taxes have been paid.

It's prudent for an investor to keep such an account so as to save time by not having to cut through all of the government red tape involved in moving money out of the US if a time-critical opportunity should arise.

But, I gotta wonder where all of the outrage was back in 2006 when Teddy Kennedy, in his capacity as Chairman of the Kennedy Family Trust, IMMEDIATELY started moving his family's money ($500,000,000.00 worth) off-shore after the Democrats took control of Congress.

Why not if you can do it , build your dream home. I am sure that there are many people out there that if they  had the money they would do the same thing .

I design and build such houses.  I have built houses twice that size for two people to reside in.  When asked why they were building it, they replied, "It is an art project".  Is a great piece of architecture any less worthy an art object than a painting or sculpture?  With 25 people using the house, it averages about 500 s.f. per occupant.  That is about average in the U.S. At least this house will get a lot of use.
I hope the family enjoys the beautiful beach and wish that everyone could be so fortunate,  but it would not make my life any better if you took away what they have, and heaven knows that the building industry could use some help; and it isn't going to come from poor people.  And, you know what, the whole world can use the same beach, even if they have to drive to get there.  Your tube ride is just as good as theirs, and, depending on your skill, might even be better.  Quit being bitter.

Why no big articles on how Obama BOUGHT his house.... oh yeah thats right it was by slight of hand, generous LOAN from friend, pulling strings for change in how property was divided, and giving political consideration to the Chicago machine.  Oh yeah, and got his wife a job that was soooo important it never existed before her, or after her, but got a hugh raise after a year because her husband was a in Chicago politics.  How did the Obamas get their money?  Not by working that is for sure but by using Chicago style politics.... the dirtest and most criminal type of politics.

Rich people are great! We need more of them. They buy things, they take vacations, they eat out, they employ people. Those that are employed by them pay taxes. All the things they spend their money on benefits the rest of us.

I am not against the wealthy folks. However, this year I paid 28 per cent Income tax with my school teacher  pension. I paid more Income tax than the very rich folks for many years. Is that fair?

Well, Mr. Self Sufficient, even if Romney did donate all his inheritance to charity (which he did not), he was still born with a silver spoon in his mouth.  And you must still be under your rock if you believe anything you wrote.  and Mr. Red98c5, gas was 22 cents under Kennedy - what's your point?  Hopey Changey?  My god, at least Palin isn't running!!!!!
