Build a custom entertainment center
Cut the clutter and add a focal point for your family's gathering place.

When creating an entertainment space that your whole family can enjoy, start by identifying a focal point of the room, and design the space out from there. Keep in mind that you are designing the room for the entire family, so try to consider everyone's likes and hobbies.
Finding balance and harmony when the age differences are more than 30 years apart can be challenging, but hey, what's life without the little challenges?
For the Taylors' entertainment space, we a decided to build an entertainment center as the focal point of the room, designing the play area, storage solutions and lounging space.
When designing a family space, I always leave the ability to change the space as the family grows, which is the main reason I built the entertainment center as a movable piece.

Remember, no project is too small, because even the "small" projects can make a big impact on your family's life.
Here's everything you need to complete this project:
- Chop saw on sliding rails and 12-inch blade
- Circular saw with 7-1/4-inch blade
- Table saw with 12-inch blade
- Orbital sander
- Sand paper: 220 fine grit
- Measuring tape
- Carpenter's square
- Extension cords
- Chalk line
- Eye protection
- Ear plugs
- Finishing nail gun
- 18 gauge finishing nails
- Wood glue
- Wood for base and top shelving unit: Birch plywood
- Wood for trim/facing: Poplar, 1-by-2 flat stock
- Wood stain
- Disposable rubber gloves
- High-quality staining brush
- Staining rags (old, white T-shirts work well)
- 4 metal L-brackets
- 8 wood screws for L-brackets
Optional Shaker-style doors for base:
- 8 hinge and screw sets
- 4 door knobs and crews sets
- 1/2-inch drill bit for boring holes in doors
- Dowling jig
- 32 pre-cut 1/2-inch diameter dowels; 2-inches long
- 1/4-inch panel board
- Wood for door frames: 1-by-3 flat stock
- Alignment guide for installing door knobs
