We have half inch pex tubing installed under all of our tile which provides tons of radiant heat in the cold months.  It's especially nice to have it in the bathroom because the tub is encased in pex as well which means no chilly ceramic against your skin.  The toilet isn't intentionally heated, but it gets a bit of contact warmth from the floor.  Heated floors aren't too expensive, especially when it's a small room.  Area rugs are a waste of time in our house, and a tripping hazard, so patterned tile is a nice option and helps avoid the "white tile wasteland" that comes with heated floors.
But some of these slides have no personality.

Who wants to get up and feel ice cold tile underfoot.  Give me wall to wall carpet in a bedroom every time.
