it would take 10-20 years for solar panels to pay for themselves, then they dont even last that long as well. Then what do you do with them.I bet they are bad for the envirnment as well.Green isnt cheap, doesnt mean better and usually take away american jobs.Global warming, climate change is another crock.Scientists have been known to be wrong and it just that, science. Its not always fact.40K for a hybrid that gets maybe 50mpg.My cheap escort gets 40mpg and gets me to work and back with no issues. We need to drill for more oil and create some jobs.

The truth of the matter is, you need green to go green.  As a middle class American I can not afford to go out and buy 10-12 solor panels to put on my roof that will charge costly batteries so I can have toast.  Nor can I shell-out 40 grand for a hybrid car.   I care about the environment as much as anyone, so I recycle like a mad woman, I drive a fuel efficeint car and a motorcycle when it's comfortable out.  I use creek water for my plants, I make my own compost, and I pee twice before flushing.  Can't get much greener than that.

About those straw bale haters...When i first took a class from an architect and then built a straw bale house, I was surprised to see how well they worked WHEN BUILT CORRECTLY. Today many still stand and function, 400 years old in France. Actually here in the US the UBC recognizes and codifies straw bale construction techniques; insurers love them because they are almost 100% silica and cellulose. They pass the 2-hour test . The bugs, mold, etc that others have mentioned don't exist on any of the straw bale homes I have inspected. They are very quiet, have stunning features like window seats and extremely low utility bills as a result of the custom plaster interior, R-48 insulation and usual attendant energy efficient features like LED lighting, passive solar design, water htg, etc.

There seems to be a mistaken notion that going "green" will save money. Thats wrong. It may help the environment in some ways, but it does cost more. People in construction know this. The news is so misleading. If we produce and distribute energy more efficiently and let private innovation(not government)deal with the side effects we will save time money and the environment.

BTW, I would never fill my stud bays with spray foam unless it was an experiment!

This entire article is a crock.........$100 to insulate a house?  Solar panels like in the picture for

$100-$600?......Where are you going to get fire insurance for a straw bale insulated house?....

and a green roof?.....expensive, energy consuming projects just so you can feel good about being "green"?........this is on the MSN page?.....WTF?.....this is trash......

LOL, straw bale insulation?  It rots, holds moisture, has mold, and can be a feeding ground for lots of pests.  It's nostalgic, but it's silly to mention it in a serious article about insulation.

Wisely, in another part of the article, it is mentioned that common batt insulation is cheap, manufactured for the purpose of insulating, has vapor barriers, won't rot, and easy to install.  LOL, straw bales?

That is NOT rolled fiberglass insulation. That is the spray foam insulation which is great but certainly not as cheap as rolled insulation. What you see in the picture looks to be  new construction with the spray foam insulation being added prior to closing in the walls (and usually it is sprayed from the inside out). For a retrofit install, this picture is misleading (I guess in the same sense that JenBritny's best friend met her millionaire man on whatever single site she is hawking)

Oh yea...and seal ALL the air leaks in your house.  You don't want any of that fresh air to get in. Positively brilliant.  One solution to suit everybody.

Best (or worst) part about the fluorescent bulbs is the pollutants that they make manufacturing them.  And the 'hazardous' elements in them.  Technically, if you break one, you would need to call a haz-mat team to clean it up.  And when they get thrown away and broken and all the mercury, etc., seeps into the groundwater...............................

Gotta love the green idiots that think 'saving the planet' requires switching from a possible pollution that can be fixed by trees, to an eternal, heavy element source of pollution that can't be cleaned up.  If they keep 'saving us', pretty soon we will all be dead.

Now...HERE'S a blatant contradiction..."If you can stop the sun's heat from getting to your home, that's going to save a lot of energy,"...BUT...the greenies want us to OPEN our window treatments (curtains, blinds, etc.) to let the natural sunlight in the house to save electricity on lighting the house...much less the fact that they've managed to ram through the passing of the bill makingn incandescent  light bulbs illegal and mandating the litte queer a$$ed spiral fluorescent bulbs...go figure...

I enclosed a porch and installed large windows from Restore (Habitat for Humanity) and am putting ceramic tiles down.  Already the house is much warmer because of this inexpensive, simple treatment.  Where I live the temperatures have gotten to about -50, and any way I can do passive heating at a relatively low cost, I'll do.  I shop sales, Restore, and want ads and with a little patience I have weatherproofed my house built in 1915 fairly well.  One of the biggest heat losses comes from drafts.  They suck the warmth right out of a house, no matter how well insulated.  These can be fixed fairly cheaply.  Good luck, and don't let your ego get in the way.

Re SOLAR UPGRADE:

The alternative view to ROI is cash-flow quantification.  In my case:

  1. How much will Southern California Edison gouge me for electricity every month?  2010 Avg = $170 for a 12-month period.
  2. Given the rebates available on a 2.25kWh system, what is my realistic cost? About 14K (8K in rebates).
  3. How much does that cost to finance on an ING Home Equity Line of Credit fixed Loan over 15 years?  Approx $100/month @ 4%.
  4. How much does my average SCE bill reduce by? $90+/month (low-side estimate).
  5. Cash flow impact?  Close to a wash in 2011, but positive thereafter (see 6!)...
  6. How much will SCE raise rates each year? 7% (published for 2012).
  7. How much does that affect me? Negligible because it's for the top 3 tiers, which I'll be supplying via solar.
  8. Do I care about ROI?  Not at all, because my cash-flow will either go to Edison (increasing), or to my Loan (fixed).

As was said in "Notting Hill", "Our perspectives are somewhat different!"

Something to think about...
