Tankless water heaters are a TERRIBLE idea.   Installation often runs in the $3000+ range so it takes YEARS just to break even

I've never seen a ceiling fan at Lowes or Home Depot for $50 or even close to that price....I swear to God, who thinks up these articles?  You must be brain dead or completely uninformed and most definitely NOT a homeowner.   Have you shopped for new dishwashers?  a new hot water heater?  Ummmm  I don't think so.  The price savings is laughable.  How about telling your readers to turn off lights in unused rooms?  Turn their thermostats down to 68-70 in the winter?  Try telling them common sense ways to save. That's my 2 cents worth....it's all I can spare with all my ridiculously expensive energy bills and all....just sayin.

several of these 'money savers' are simply wrong.

a tankless water heater does not save enough energy over it's lifespan to even pay for itself, much less, save you anything.

Same with a dishwasher.  the cost of the appliance is now so high that it COST YOU MORE to upgrade, than it costs to keep your old one.

compact fluorescent bulbs cost so much (compared to a regular bulb) that you lose money going with them. (plus they are UGLY and a huge pollutant)

All in all, the only valid 'tips' in this article were use weather stripping, and add insulation. Other than that, straight garbage 'advice'.

I think you are wrong in saying that a tankless water heater will "shave 20 percent off their water bill". Because tankless water heaters don't save water. They can reduce the amount of energy used to heat the hot water that you use, but not the water consumption. So your water bill will be the same and your gas or electric bill may reduce a little. It is also important to state that a tankless water heater is a lot more expensive and will take some time before the breakeven point in your expenses.

I hate those programmable thermostats. They are a joke. we have an old style round knob thermostat on our wall and it works great. I keep it at 62 in the winter and cooler months and 78 in the summer. We open the windows and use fans at night and then shut everything in ythe morning. As long as we keep the doors closed except to go in and out the house stays below 75, unless it was a hot night. This cut our power bill by 30 Percent.

Ummm...save $8 a year with a new dishwasher?  That's gotta be an error cause it would take many many years to pay for the new washer!

What no mention of geothermal or solar systems. OOH how about replacing 2 or 3 bulb ceiling lights with one containing a single bulb or just using candles for light and heat. I keep reading these articles hoping to see something intelligent or informative. What a let down. Read up on old colonial or victorian era building practices or into southern plantation homes. Those people knew how to milk the limited energy  supply for their homes. Building practices and improvements like those are just too long forgotten.

Do more research on tankless water heaters.  Check Fine Homebuilding and other sights.  Much research says you will save nothing.

A $50 ceiling fan is a waste of $$$.  To get your $ out of this appliance & not have to buy one every few years, get a good quality fan at a lighting store.  The fans at the box stores & the lower end of what the manufactures sells.
