A million dollars is not what it used to be, but it's definitely enough to put a pretty decent roof over your head in almost any U.S. housing market. In some markets, that roof – and the home it covers – will be extravagant. As with all real estate, it's all about location. So if you have a million bucks burning a hole in your pocket, see which of the homes in these 12 U.S. markets is most enticing. We gathered these examples with help from our partner, Realtor.com. This town house in the Bel Air Ridge area of North Beverly Hills has big canyon views and is within walking distance of the Glen Center's shops and restaurants. The home has a chef's kitchen that opens to a family room, and fireplaces in the living room and master bedroom. The community has a tennis club with seven courts and pro instructors, two pools and a fully equipped gym and clubhouse.

The close-in Atlanta market is on an upswing, says owner/agent Mary Jane Parker. "Our office has seen a growing number of closings in the past few months, with an increasing number of market-value sales."

Las Vegas

A cool million gets you million-dollar views from this home on the 16th tee in the gated Red Rock Country Club community, with views across the Strip and the city to the mountains. The home features a private courtyard with stained stamped concrete, a fountain and sculpture. Custom features include a two-story stacked-stone fireplace, custom light fixtures and a Japanese soaking tub in the master bedroom. The home comes fully furnished with designer pieces, artwork and audio/video equipment.

Seattle

This waterfront home, with 50 feet of rare sandy beach, is at the extreme southern end of West Seattle, and looks out over the Puget Sound at Vashon Island, Blake Island and the Olympic Mountains. The house has large picture windows on both levels to take in the amazing views. The previous owners had lived here since 1967. "I'm still seeing a lot of caution out there by buyers as they are rarely wanting to pay list price and really homing in on homes that are in exceptional condition and in the best neighborhoods," says listing agent Scott Monroe.

Detroit

Penthouse living can be yours for a cool $1.1 million in Detroit. This huge home is on the 29th floor of the Residences at the Westin Book Cadillac, one of the city's most luxurious addresses. The complex has a round-the-clock fitness center, an indoor pool and spa, concierge and valet, five restaurants -- and a 15-year tax abatement. Taxes are only about $500 per year.

Washington, D.C.

This unit is in a pre-World War II cooperative residential complex on more than 10 acres of landscaped lawns and formal gardens in northwestern D.C. It was originally two apartments until its owner, an architect, combined them. The expanded, spacious floor plan has a formal entryway, a formal dining room, high ceilings, custom columns and refinished hardwood floors. "The market for high-end unique homes in great locations is strong in the D.C. market," says Elysia Casaday of the Wydler Brothers Realty Team. "If a listing is overpriced it will sit on the market, but if priced well it will sell quickly at or very close to asking price in a matter of days."

Dallas

Everything's bigger in Texas. This home on a half-acre is no exception. Outside are mature trees, a huge pool and a spa area. Inside, the spacious home has been extensively updated. Notable features include very tall (up to 19-foot) ceilings, a sauna, a massage room, a wine cellar, a wet bar and a media room with tiered seating. "Million-dollar homes are not uncommon in Dallas, but luxury-market sales have slowed down a bit with the sluggish economy," says listing agent Phil Yarbrough.

Miami

This home on 2.5 acres is in a rural area of farms, groves and horse ranches, 45 minutes from downtown Miami and 20 minutes to the Florida Keys. The area feels rural but is five minutes to shopping and major roads. The home has been upgraded in recent years. An in-law quarters has a separate entrance, and a 1,000-square-foot covered patio has a gas barbecue. "The over-million-dollar market in Miami appears to be active, with many of the properties being purchased by foreign buyers," says owner/agent Patricia Ambrose.

Boston

The Whitehall building, with easy access to the shops and restaurants of Beacon Street, dates from the late 1800s. But the condo units themselves are new as of five or six years ago. This unit has a top-end kitchen, marble baths and private sun decks off each bedroom, in addition to a 1,300-square-foot roof deck. "There remains solid demand for well-priced properties in the sought-after communities closest to Boston," says listing agent Kate Vicksell. "In particular, the high end (over $1 million) market in Greater Boston continues to outperform the broader market."

Chicago

One of the more affordable single-family homes in East Lincoln Park, this home was recently rehabbed to add a gourmet kitchen with stainless-steel appliances, custom window treatments and hardwood floors throughout. The home also has a two-car garage and a yard with a deck. Transportation is close, as is the local high school and shopping.

New York City

The Southgate is a pre-World War II co-op on a tree-lined cul-de-sac in the Beekman neighborhood on Manhattan's east side. The building has a common garden and a children's play area. This renovated unit faces north, west and south with dramatic Midtown views and good light. The apartment has a large kitchen that opens to the living room, and island seating for six.

Custom designed by home designer Michael Scott Garvin, who also lived here, this home has just about every upgrade, such as cherry cabinetry with glass display doors and extensive custom millwork, bathrooms with vessel sinks and furniture-quality vanities. Many ceilings are barreled, arched, paneled and hand-painted. Twenty-five hand-carved stone columns line the home's interior and exterior. "There is a lot of competition in the $1 million-plus price range, and even as the lower end is recovering, the higher-end homes are still struggling," says listing agent Mary-Lynn Allen of Prudential Arizona Properties.. "A home of this caliber would have sold for well over $2 million just a few years ago."
