How about a brushed copper relief plate with an impression of your favorite animal or building on it. (perhaps a country scene)

Kelli17:  I know how you feel.  What I did was did marble tile over the brick (I used a Turkish Bordo Grutzo <sp?) and did off-whit painted trim around it all to frame it, and built a really nice cornice (mantle) to top it off.  20 years later, we still love the looks.  So many ways to finish a fireplace/hearth...

Also don't buy and old home if you want new.  Too many beautiful older homes being ruined by idiots and their granite and stainless steel home depot remodels.

I learned the hard way to avoid white porcelain kitchen sinks.  We installed a nice Kohler white porcelain sink during our kitchen remodel, and even when brand new, it was easy to stain it with tea, coffee, red wine, blueberries, and nearly everything else.  I would have never imagined that a brand new white porcelain sink would do this.  If I had it to do over, I would never install any sink in a kitchen that wasn't stainless steel.
