Even better:  Load your kids up in the truck and go scavenging for free lumber, bricks, old windows and doors, shingles, and furniture.  Then dedicate a few hours every Saturday to building the playhouse together.  If the kids deserve it at all, they'll run home from school and work on their project with glee.  My parents, sisters, and I built an extremely cute playhouse out of shipping pallets and industrial crates that people were throwing away.  My dad showed us how to build it, my mother supervised the tool use, we pulled nails, measured, sorted the good wood from the bad, had terrible fights with each other about the right way to do it, held one end of the board while the other was nailing up the other, took turns holding the ladder, got yelled at occasionally, painted, decorated, planted flowers, and played.  It had nice pine boards on the outside, a bright red metal roof, slightly dented, a loft, a mosaic tile floor, and mismatched windows with flower boxes.  It was about as big as the ones in the article, and when we grew up it was used as a garden shed.  We learned A LOT from our project, including resourcefulness, math, how to follow instructions, cooperation, and how to not knock yourself out with a crow bar.  
There are always tons of free things that people are desperate to get rid of on Craigslist and Freecycle.  Or even thrift sales and construction sites.  Long live elbow grease, frugality, and creativity!

When our daughter was little (preschool) we got her a See's candy cardboard play store. It was all white and costs $20 bucks. She colored it and stuffed it with her treasures. I would serve her lunch in it. Using her imagination she and her friends played in it for hours! It was the best $20 dollars we ever spent on toys.

It would be a great investment if the time the kids spent in the playhouse involved family time with mom and dad. Otherwise, it just looks like the parents  want them out of the house so they don't have to be a parent. What a concept...actually having to be a parent and spending time with your children!

I grew up privileged and, believe me, there is no way on this earth that my parents would have thrown away this kind of money on a playhouse!  Really, it's no one's business how other people spend their money but this certainly isn't teaching kids the value of money and how to use it.

I have twin 7 year olds and a 5 year old and honestly they would love the pirate ship. However, I would never buy such a thing for my kids. I would however (if I had that kind of coin) let my kids "buy it" and donate it to the local community park and let all the kids play on it. This way my kids get the feeling of helping others and they can visit the park. (maybe ill get a run in)

This sickens me.   As millions of people in our world have to go without shelter, food and clean water,  please teach your children charity rather than teaching them the selfishness and sloth that this excess promotes.

The giant cardboard box — the kind that refrigerators and washing machines come packaged in, was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in 2006. toyhalloffame DOT toys SLASH cardboard-box. (I had to take out the DOT and SLASH as the post was blocked because it appeared as spam or an automated post.) The reason? It greatly encouraged imagination.

 

To summarize ...  Those huge washer, stove, big-screen TV, or refrigerator boxes turn into forts, houses, spaceships, submarines, castles, caves..... WAY COOL! And smaller ones? Draw wheels on the side and you have a car. They turn into dioramas, playhouse furniture..... Tons of fun, imaginative play!

These "playhouses" are just soooooo FAR over the top. And that giant fort with the slide and such? Yeah... the Tumble Outpost that sells for almost a quarter of a mil? You can get a really cool, scaled one down at Costco for $1K. And that felt extravagant when we bought it. But the kids spent hundreds upon hundreds of hours on it.

yeah, don't assume rich people that have nice things are all evil. it's not how much money you have or what you own, it's how you make use of what you own. i know plenty of rich people that have a good head on their shoulders and know that they were priviledged to have what they did and did great things with the "plenty" they were given. i'm not rich, btw. ha ha. just sick of people judging people with money. what if you happened to be born into a rich family?

In a time when people are losing their homes to foreclosure and families are taking to living in their cars, this is distasteful.  But, I suppose it's no different than the people driving around $250K cars or wearing a $45K watch.  Rather than indulging kids in conspicuous consumption,  perhaps these parents could teach them charity.  Just a thought.

Well, I agree with all those taught their kids the value of $$$$$.  However, now the kids are growing up with adult's mind -- they're so brave to rape and kill...I'll say watch out what the kids are doing in the playhouse.  In fact, it's possible for other people to sneek into the playhouse and whoever (no matter kids or adults) in the playhouse can be victim.  DON'T REGRET for building playhouse!!   Remember kidnapping is ongoing everywhere and most of the time they can't be found LIVE anymore.

This is the tail wagging the dog.  I had a cardboard playhouse when I was a kid.

I loved it. Now a days its all wood. And expensive. It for rich people. who can afford to spoil there childern. Kids today do not know what a simple toy is.

All that money they spent on that could have been put into a college fund.

Or now a days saved emergencies, in the bank.  They do now a days have great sheds they sell, they are a bit pricy. But cute.  This reminds me of the Roloff's farm.

And Daddy built all these playhouses for his kids. Now they are all grown up.

So the playhouses are going to rot away. Either that or daddy will bulldoze them down.  I found it all to be a waste of money.  Kids need to learn the value of a dollar and play with toys, have playhouses, but not like that.  Now a days its keep up with the Jone's and the Jone's kids. Some people also build dog houses like that for there dog. And to me they are totally out of there minds.

While these" mini homes " are very cute it is obscene to have this in your back yard.  What ever happened to building with your mom and dad from scrap wood and using your imagination. I want to be there with my kids when they play this obstructs any views of your kids that may get hurt.
