Funky beach cottages are almost gone in beach cities such as Del Mar and La Jolla. Until 1974 I rented a small furnished cottage up the street from famed Windansea Beach in La Jolla for under $160 a month. Some still call La Jolla a 'village' but those days are long gone. Cocktails for a buck in bars on La Jolla Blvd and a great bar above the Cove, the Bratskellar. Like Del Mar and Newport Beach, only the well off and those with high income jobs can afford to live anywhere near the coast.
