Narbonne, France has everything that Sydney, Vancouver and Geneva etc have to offer.  Beaches close by, better (and warmer) weather, lots and lots of history, great wines, incredible restaurants, nearby mountains and all of Europe at your feet.  Go to Narbonne!

Notice a single American city isn't on there....lol!  I definitely agree with Sydney...it's absolutely amazing out there!

I guess if you prefer cold weather, Germanic people and don't care about ethnic diversity, Vancouver being the only exception, those are the best places to live. But geez, I've lived in several places around the world and those wouldn't be my choices. The San Francisco Bay Area , with it's Wine Country, Silicon Valley and  jaw dropping coastline, didn't make the list? You gotta be kiddin' me! Then again, that's Forbes for you.

I lived in Vienna for a couple of years - a blonde, German-speaking European/Canadian. Despite fitting in by all reasonable standards, I was never welcome. One needs to scratch the surface. Unfortunately, outsiders will never truly be welcome in Austria.

I would tend to agree very much with this list.  I have lived in Germany and have traveled extensively throughout Europe.  Things they look at are things like low crime rates, low poverty rates, high levels of education etc.  Not the weather and beaches.  You can go to third world countries and get stunning scenery and great weather, but you wouldn't want to live there.  SFO does not even come close to the quality of life to be found in Europe and especially Germanic countries.  It's about so much more than beaches and warm sun.

I don't suppose it did.  Quality of life, education level, murder rate 35 times lower than ours, property crime rates 10 times lower than ours, access to healthcare, access to the arts, level of satisfaction of the people etc. etc.  They all count into it.  It has nothing to do with "anti americanism" it has everything to do with they are just better places to live.  Stop digging your head in the sand and look at how things really are here.  The only way to fix a problem is to admit that you have one first.
