18 sweet kitchens from the 1990s
Individuality was in during the 1990s, and these kitchens were no exception. Check out House Beautiful’s top picks.
Inviting kitchen
Hollywood executive producer Pamela Robinson Specktor knew just what she wanted in her former courtyard: a kitchen of Old World simplicity and charm. To her that meant strictly white wood cabinets, with glass knobs collected at flea markets. Featured in the February 1994 issue of House Beautiful.

Household hub

Simple serenity
Sleek, simple serenity was the goal of this 1999 kitchen by Berkeley, Calif., designer Fu-Tung Cheng. “Pale woods, watery pools of concrete and indirect lighting set the tone in a new Marin County kitchen,” wrote House Beautiful. “But look again and notice the intricacy of a puzzle. Cupboard doors are composed in an asymmetrical pattern, and solid blocks of appliances play against voids. The interlocking materials on a monumental island — with a concrete counter, perforated-steel shelf and maple cutting board — set up a delicate balance.”

Cocina Mexicana
The interior designer used one strong tile pattern throughout the kitchen and on an adjacent patio beyond the striped curtain. Terra-cotta tiles echo earthen floors of pre-Hispanic dwellings. Featured in House Beautiful’s April 1990 issue.

Nostalgic ’90s
“Nostalgia is not just a soft-focus memory for San Francisco designer Candra Scott,” House Beautiful wrote of this throwback kitchen in 1999. “It comes with a double oven, four burners, a broiler and a griddle, courtesy of the vintage O’Keefe & Meritt stove. Nothing postdates the 1940s, including the roomy Frigidaire.” Scott said of the room, “I wanted it to feel like grandma’s kitchen — only more fun.”

London kitchen
The basement kitchen is the family hangout for reading and visiting as well as for cooking and eating. Storing pots and pans and other implements in the open has a dual purpose: mood-making decoration and convenience for the active cook. Featured in House Beautiful’s September 1992 issue.

Integrated kitchen
A refined palette of materials unites this 1990s kitchen with the dining area and lifts the raw space to “the next evolutionary level,” according to House Beautiful editors in the April 1999 issue. “Italian elm cabinetry echoes the white oak floor, and the island’s Corian top carries over to the dining table. A stainless steel shelf hung on a white glass wall holds a minimal row of glasses.”

English farmhouse kitchen
Convenience was a priority for the family when designing the kitchen. All the working elements — counters, stove, sink and island — are only a few steps apart. The island doubles as work space and kitchen table. Featured in the April 1990 issue of House Beautiful.

Picture-perfect kitchen
Photographer Jack McDonald designed this San Francisco kitchen, circa 1999. “Late nights in Paris bistros inspired the zinc countertops, less clinical than stainless steel,” House Beautiful editors wrote. “A double-sided glass cabinet over a high breakfast bar allows friends on the far side to sip wine and watch without getting in his way.”

Intimate kitchen
The trick for rendering a kitchen soft and intimate is adding a rug, designer Paris-based designer Michelle Halard told House Beautiful in 1999. The paintings and antique table also add to the mellow look.

Turn-of-the-century look
In 1995, the owners of this California kitchen wanted a turn-of-the-century European look, even though the kitchen was new. Designer Lou Ann Bauer created an old-school atmosphere by mixing dozens of elements, including dismantling a 19th-century banker’s desk, claiming its base for the island, and mounting the spindled top as a stove hood. Painted under-counter cabinets standing on bracketed feet rather than plinths; cherry cupboards with leafy bronze pulls, an English dish-drying rack and a reproduction farmhouse sink help complete the illusion.

Fashionable kitchen
Fashion designer Han Feng and her husband, entrepreneur Stuart Schonberger, had a circular living room and this compact cube of a kitchen in their prewar New York apartment in 1995. Just 10 feet square and 10 feet high, the kitchen barely accommodated Feng’s collections of plates and platters, professional cookware and antique teapots she had brought when she emigrated from China nine years earlier. “My job was to pack in storage space,” architect Scott K. James said. “That meant taking full advantage of the height.” A rolling ladder brings the highest cupboards into reach or hangs flat by the door.

Old World and American
This kitchen in a 19th-century cast-iron building in Manhattan’s SoHo district, featured in House Beautiful in 1995, has an Old World feel that manages to be distinctly American at the same time. The old grocery counter was rebuilt to house recycling and trash compartments, drawers for utensils and a microwave.
