I love the climate bias in every top 10 (top whatever) best places to live list.  If you like to snow ski or participate in winter sports, or like autumn, none of these cities offers a good "quality of life."  There are many pricey areas that are nowhere near the California coast.  Alternatively call this list the top 10 priciest, 8 of which have suffered massive declines in value...fyi, San Fran is not the Silicon Valley, not in climate, attitude, etc., so lumping them together is laughable.

San Diego should NOT be on this list!

The cost of living is outrageous and there is definitely no payback.

* Housing is at average $600,000 which is usually for a condo or 3-bedroom old house not located anywhere near the metro area.

* Most people in San Diego have a hard time finding a job-the unemployment rate is a little higher than the national average.

* Many use to make their money in real estate, but ever since the housing slump, that career is basically gone (the houses are still pricey, though!).

* There are only 3 credible schools in the whole city and only those striving to be doctors go there-usually people from other countries.

* Most people in San Diego generally have bad attitudes and big egos. Why? I don't know.

* The only reason most people go to San Diego is for Comic Con once a year. There's no longer much room at the venue for that...

* The "downtown" area is seriously like 2 blocks. Smallest downtown you'll ever see.

* Most of San Diego shuts down at 8-9pm. Not much too do or eat after that.

* Those who do come to San Diego come for the weather. The idea of "perfect weather" is a myth. Think more like constant heatwave because chances are you won't be able to afford the 20 miles of coast that has decent weather.

* If you like music, art, diversity, or open-minds, you won't find it in San Diego, sorry.

Please-people thinking of visiting or moving to San Diego-don't waste your life or time.

It's simply not worth the cost.

What a joke: California is in the tank and sinking fast what with dysfunctional governments, massive financial problems, lousy (and now, de-funded) schools, gutted state colleges and universities, high unemployment, higher foreclosure rates and despite what Arnie says, higher taxes as a percentage of income buying an ever-shrinking quality of life. Tried driving the 405 at any time of the day or night?

Between the droughts and the fires and the earthquakes, folks, the Golden State is not where I want to be. The only good thing I see about great weather is that you can live comfortably in a tent after losing your house, job, car, etc. C'mon, MSN, you can do better than pieces like this. Fluff is one thing but useless information absent context is worse than useless.

That picture of Salinas is actually of Monterey. That's Sly McFly's which is on Cannery Row.

Salinas, give me a break.

First of all the picture shown is not Salinas but Cannery Row in Monterey Bay  which is a good distance away from Salinas and FAR more pricey. You are no where near the ocean once you arrive in Salinas so the picture is misleading.

Second, having grown up in Monterey and having lived in Salinas for a few years because it was less expensive I can tell you it is NOT a great place to live.

Gangs are and have been a serious issue for Salinas for a long time. Heck, it has its own maximum security prison. Moreover, it is the salad bowl of the world so every few months the fields that surround Salinas are fertilized and the whole darn city STINKS to the high heavens.

Outside of the small downtown area, there are no really nice places to visit and no up scale hotels only Motels.

Salinas should NOT have made this list.

the picture you have for 'salinas, ca' is NOT in salinas!  you took a picture from steinbeck plaza on MONTEREY'S cannery row...  TOTALLY different places.  salinas is inland from the coast, monterey is right on the water... salinas has warmer temperatures and less expensive cost of living than monterey.  in fact, with the average home price (according to money magazine's 2009 website) being approximately $258K, i'd hardly call it an expensive place to live.   certainly NOT on the level of san diego, new york or santa barbara.  don't get me wrong, salinas is a lovely town, but it does NOT fit the profile that the other cities on the list do.

I can vouch for Naples, FL, being a nice place to live.  It has a charming downtown area, beautiful scenery, clean streets, and all that.  But it is also a very, VERY expensive place to live.  It is basically "Heaven's Waiting Room" for well-to-do retirees, old money, new money, and those who service their interests.  If you are a probate lawyer, you will do well there.  Financial advisor or accountant, you'll do great.  School teacher, mechanic, or police officer?  Not so much.  You'll live outside the city in central Collier County somewhere and have a long commute.  The city proper is 93% white and a GOP stronghold.  If that's your cup of tea, it's a very nice place.
