Why do some people moan about losing their homes? When they could not afford them in the first place. there is a time to buy, like now.... Just an observation.

If you are having trouble affording it. Call your Mortgage company and have them see if you are qualified for the HAMP program....I am in the same boat so good luck!

It is great to have 20/20 hindsight, very few predicted the drop in home values.

I think it is interesting that the areas that have the most affordable homes are those that have the highest unemployment and the areas that are the most expensive are the lowest.  Seems to me that getting laid off or having a house that is suddenly out of your reach financially will force you to either foreclose or sell at a ridiculously low price driving the market prices down.  Plus who wants to move into an area like the Mid-west that has been in a recession for a decade and has the highest unemployment rate in the US.  I mean hello... 14%?  Detroit has over 17% unemployment.  If you are one of the lucky few to get a job and move into such an "affordable" area, there is nothing to say you are going to keep your job.  I guess the point I am making is this article is a bit silly.  It is more for investment opportunists who have cash laying about.

My home was affordable when there were jobs. Now the only paying construction work is Gov't related and requires that you bond for the work if you are a contractor. Unfortunately everyone-(Everyone I know) is broke and has bad credit now. Nepatism is out of control. Qualified people sit at home with resumes at the ready while unqualified unskilled friends and relatives get all the prevailing wage jobs. I am amazed and confused by the presence of San luis Obispo - Paso Robles on this list. It is a shame what our area has become.

This is false (that very few could foresee the drop in homes). It was predicted and lamented WIDELY for 4 years prior. It is just that greedy banks lured in lower end wage earners to overextend themselves with tasty mortgages. Now, in the American Way, people like to find excuses why they are victims, instead of owning their plight in some way. If you bought a house blindly without proper marker research beforehand (and then would find out how close you were to that eventual free-fall), then shame on you, not "few could predict it. Let us stop all the denial. I went upside down a quarter mil - and I knew it would come, I "owned" my responsibility for taking a risk in the market, and ensured all that I had the capability to take the chance. Subsequently, when I had to lose a quarter million to sell and move to a new job, I owned that, and did not contribute to the "dump on the system" option of short sales or default/foreclosure. I took out deep debts to protect the system and others rather than blame and take what I could for me.

If others acted responsibly, stopped blaming a mythical big bank brother and own their future, the market would not have dived nearly so badly. Alas, thank the paradigm of the "people" foremost - that's the American Idol way...

my 2 cents...
