The photo of Buffalo-Niagara Falls, NY is actually a view of Niagara Falls, Ontario.  Niagara Falls, NY doesn't have a skyline like that at night.  In fact, there is no skyline to speak of at all.  I'm not so sure about the claim that the job base has diversified to "pharmaceuticals and financial services".  The job base has diversified away from manufacturing, but no industry has taken it's place.  There aren't enough high-paying jobs in Buffalo-Niagara Falls to attract people from out of town in large numbers.

It is true that Buffalo has beautiful architecture, affordable housing and a lot of venues for culture and entertainment.

If you are thinking of selling your house, either because you have to or just wish to, "Selling Your House in a Tough Market" by Ilona Bray, J.D. & Alayna Schroeder, J.D. will be a valuable read in your preparations. The book contains just over 200 pages of practical advice for the home seller. Besides the two authors, the advice comes from a panel of experts. Each chapter starts with a brief bio and the favorite home selling tips from the advisor who assisted with the chapter, NOLO sets the standard for making legal information accessible to everyone, and this book does just that for the home seller.

There is a reason why these places are all affordable.  Weather!  I don't know anybody who would willingly live in freezing cold temps when they have a choice to live in somewhat tropical weather which is why places like Los Angeles and San Diego, CA are still very expensive.

I'm from Houston, and I don't want to go back to that smog filled, traffic infested, rat dump.

That is clearly a picture of the City of Buffalo from the waterfront. There is not shot of Niagara Falls or Canada.

I also am offended by the "If you don’t mind cold, cloudy weather" comment. Seriously? We are going to stereotype? It's November and the past couple weeks have had temps in the 60's and plenty of sun.
Buffalo has some of the best summer weather in the country. Yes, the summer only lasts 4 months. The Spring and Fall are beautiful and comfortable. The winter is not as bad as the stereotype. Buffalo has a reputation for snow but if you do some research, most parts of the northern USA and most of NY get more snow than Buffalo and have much colder winter temperatures.
At least the article got the architecture, Frank Lloyd Wright, nightlife and housing part correct.

Des Moines is a great little city.  Kind of monotonous countryside around it, but the town itself has a lot to offer.  I really enjoyed the couple years I lived there and wouldn't mind going back (and I'm a native Northern Californian).

The first post regarding the Buffalo picture actually being Niagara Falls, ON, was made weeks ago and the publisher said that they fixed the picture.  So to the people that complained that the picture of Buffalo is actually correct, well, yeah, now it is!

And to Madow that said "I also am offended by the "If you don’t mind cold, cloudy weather" comment."  What is there to be offended about?  It is a FACT, in 2008 Buffalo had only 54 clear days, 103 partly cloudy days and 208 cloudy days according to
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/climate/online/ccd/clpcdy.txt .  And by your own admission the summers are short.  The winters ARE long and cold in Buffalo.  Buffalo is a nice city, don't get me wrong, but I do think that the cold, cloudy comment is valid.

Why is Houston on here when San Antonio statistically has the lower cost of living, as compared to Houston? Not to mention all the cultural attrations that are here in the Alamo City.
