I don't see any problem with this article.  It's meant to give you an idea of how to turn something ugly and useless, into something useful and beautiful.  I don't think it was meant to serve as a construction manual.  For that, you'd have to buy a book or call a contractor.

While the pictures look great there is one problem  BUILDING CODES. When converting a garage to living space, most municipalities and counties require the building be brought up to code. That includes energy efficiency, footings and structural elements. So while the idea loos nice, its not as simple as it seems as the article shows and I hope homeowners just dont jump into this. Its misleading

Before you do a garage make-over, check with your local zoning department. In some areas, if you turn your garage into living area, you also have to remove the driveway leading up to the garage. Can you live with on-street parking?

The code issue is easily resolved. Keep the garage doors closed while you finish the inside and screw the permit. I have lived in my garage now for 11 years and love it. It has a beautiful bathroom, a  micro-kitchen, 2 skylights,a  mini kitchen, a huge office area and a home theater. I did all of the work myself and it is as soundly constructed as any pro might have done. However, if you feel compeled to allow the government to tell you what you can and can't do with your own property my heart goes out to you. iI you are really a rule freak don't forget to apply for your permit to mow your lawn or rake your leaves.

What happened to the building behind the garage?  Click between slides 1 & 2 and the building is magically gone in the 'after' photo in slide 1.

Tap,
I hope for your sake that you never have a fire that starts in your illegal conversion.  Your homeowners insurance company can and likely will refuse to pay the claim because you didn't get your permits.  Also someday when you go to sell your house you not only will not have the added value but you could even lose value.
