I grew up back East.  I miss it, but have been in SLC for 20 years.  I'll never leave.  Great schools, hospitals, employment, outdoor rec, affordable homes, University, low food costs, short commutes, resort towns, arts....etc.  SLC is the best kept secret in the USA!!!!!

I'm not Mormon and either are 1/2 of my friends.  The other 1/2 of my friends ARE Mormon and they're great too.  People have strange misconceptions about the LDS religion.  They're just normal people.  Some good, some bad......

Ive lived Coast to coast with and without children. I loved South Fl.. Miami.. Coral Springs was a great place to live with kids... and very luxurious and affordable.. how ever, the Fl School systems have alot of deficiencies and the teachers do not have a lot of resources and unless you are properly  motivated to assist your child regularly.. the kids do not get a good education.. I enjoyed all the recreation.. I liked the very accessible child care, afterschool programs and more than anything.. They had SICK DAY CARE for those days when your child is sick but you still have to go to work!! It was very unique!

Sorry to join so late!  I was a die hard atheist and became mormon because the people are so real.  I've lived in twelve states in my life and Utah is among the best.  Especially if you're raising children.  It's not our place to pass judgment and understanding is our biggest attribute.  Good luck to you all.

Cities in Utah were bad in the past, but now only certain neighborhoods are getting out of the stigma of idiocy and repressivness, Provo and Orem are great cities to live in now days, due to the fact they are becoming large centers of young families and college age adults with UVU and the like there now, people are becoming more open minded on various hot topic issues.

I was raised in Carlisle, PA (which I like better, by the way) and am now living in Saratoga Springs Utah. Its really weird though because they seem like 2 completely different worlds, though they are both good cities to live in...

I agree with WASHDCNATIVE.  I can't believe that people are so ignorant about the state of Utah.  My hell!  Salt Lake City is now only 40% Mormon!  Move past your bigotry, brother!

you are right, except salt lake and ogden are as bad as provo. where they may have an advantage over provo regarding repressiveness, they are equal in ignorance, and outdo provo in hypocrisy.

Totally agree.  If your family is not mormon (active or not) this is a miserable place to be.  Kids are especially treated badly and left out all the time!

Provo Utah is only for the Mormon community.  Mountainmaniac is entirely correct.  I was born & raised here & was told when I was a child  I could not play with the other kids, unless I became a Mormon & was sent to Psychiatrist...I had the "non Mormon" Syndrome - I grew up & left the State & headed for California & never looked back, family circumstances forced me to come here again because of illness....I stay away from them & they leave me alone -  I am a Catholic - & study your history, we were here First!!!!!!!!!!

rrosers -- Your story is so absurd it's hardly worth mentioning.  I lived in the SLC area from 1979-1995 and have never heard or experienced anything like this before.  I have found several wonderful places to live throughout the country and Utah ranks very high on my list.

Is it still like that?  Back in 1991 my new boss landed in Las Vegas to work because they would not sell a house to a non-mormon in Salt Lake City.
