6 high-tech sprinklers to keep your lawn green
In drought-stricken areas, turning on the sprinkler in the morning can be a wasteful luxury. Just 1,000 square feet of grass needs 620 gallons of water per week to remain green. On the other hand, runoff from overuse of sprinkler systems contributes to the 850 billion gallons of water waste that ends up in sewers each year. But fret not: You can keep your yard green without wasting water with high-tech sprinklers and some low-tech tips.
Raindrip low-flow sprinkler
The Raindrip low-flow sprinkler kit is a complete watering system that is designed to conserve. The low-flow design keeps pressure down at 25 pounds per square inch and will not emit more than 30 gallons per hour, but will still cover an area of 600 square feet. The kit includes hose, tubing, 13 sprinklers and all the parts necessary for installation. The system is better suited for watering flower gardens, as the flow rate is too low to effectively irrigate lawns.

Hunter MPR 40
Rotary nozzles reduce water waste by shooting spinning streams of water instead of a misty spray. This allows for more uniform irrigation, and the larger water droplets from the streams are less likely to evaporate before reaching roots. Some states and communities even offer rebate programs for homeowners who replace outdated systems with these nozzles. The Hunter MPR 40 sprinklers operate at low pressure, have wipers that keep debris away from the nozzle and maintain a constant out stream of 40 pounds per square inch no matter the inlet pressure.

Rain Bird rotary nozzles
Rain Bird has a variety of rotary nozzle heads to attach to a sprinkler system — all use about 60% less water than spray nozzles and operate at 20 psi. Adjustable spray radii and different spraying patterns make it easier to water the lawn and not the sidewalk.

P2-R Mini Bird
Do you like using standalone sprinklers instead of a complicated system? This low-pressure impact sprinkler can operate at water pressures as low as 15 psi and still have a watering radius of up to 30 feet. Low-pressure sprinklers are less prone to leaks than high-pressure versions.

The Rain Bird dual spray 1200 series
This pop-up sprinkler uses two spray streams, one to reach out to the edges of the lawn, and one to water the plants close to the sprinkler head. It distributes water evenly, which avoids both runoff and dry spots.

Toro drip starter kit
Drip irrigation systems avoid wasteful evaporation and runoff by delivering water directly to the roots. The downside is these systems will not water lawns, and can get complicated if you have a large garden. There are many models to choose from, and you can even build your own system, but a starter kit like this one from Toro includes all the necessary parts and can make setup easy.

Low-tech ways to conserve water
Aside from hose-end gadgetry, there are other ways to conserve water. First of all, it is important to remember that if there is a drought, the lawn can go a little brown and it will still survive. "Most people plant grasses called cool-season grasses, which do tend naturally to go a little bit brown in the summer," says Stephanie Tanner, lead engineer for the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program. A brown lawn is a dormant lawn, she says, and it will bounce back once the temperature drops and the rain returns. However, if the situation is not that dire, a combination of common-sense measures and technology is the best approach to conservation.

Rainwater barrels
Rain-harvesting barrels allow homeowners to capture the rainwater that would ordinarily spill out of the drainpipe. However, depending on your roofing material — if it has been painted or has chemically treated wood shingles — the water may not be usable for watering fruits and vegetables.

Irrigation controllers
Smart controllers irrigate on a precise schedule, and therefore reduce water waste. However, buying the timer is not enough. There will be some initial guesswork in the setup to get the ideal amount of hydration without over watering, as lawns only need an inch of water a week to stay green. Also, the best time to water is in the morning. "Most of the water gets into the plant and into the roots before the sun rises. Otherwise it just evaporates." says Stephanie Tanner, lead engineer for the Environmental Protection Agency’s WaterSense program.
This smart controller from Toro lets you program a seven-day watering schedule and will automatically adjust irrigation by season. It allows you to program water on either odd or even days, and can coordinate up to eight stations.

Rain sensors
It may seem like common sense, but when it rains, you want to shut off the sprinkler. This product makes this task easy — a wireless controller senses rain and automatically shuts off the system.

Xeriscaping
A lot of water savings can be accounted for by careful garden planning. Choose drought-resistant plants and species native to the local climate. The EPA provides a water budget tool, which can help determine how much irrigation is needed depending on the region and yard size.
