This house is 1,400 sf, sitting on a 15,000 sf lot in downtown Los Gatos, CA and is worth purchased at $1.4 Million Dollars in Sept. 2010.......hugh lot for a downtown location!!!  It's more like a rebuilt than a remodel.

this is a wonderful look, but unfortunetly not every can afford the look and price of labor and materials. You would think that the encomy poses a threat to human kind to be able to afford anything. However there are grants and goverment help out there to do these things but the questions is how you can go about getting these grants. Well first you must take a grant writing class and hope the best later for a grant. Hahaha not so easy, but it can be done with a tone of research and who in the hell has that much time and energy to face failure. I have been trying for almost two years and no luck what so ever. but good luck to athers that accomplish this tratris journey. As for the home it self it is very nice and homie, i wish i could see the floor plan.

I like what they did, I just wish that they would do things that the average person could afford to do.  We have been living in our 1200 sq ft home for 9 years now and we have just finished remodeling my kitchen. We have had to do one room at a time ourselves because we can't afford to have it done for us.  Our next project will be the roof, and this next summer we are digging a well ourselves because our city water is getting too expensive.  Welcome to the real world.

Incidently, you wouldn't believe how many kitchen renovations I do with the existing (good condition) cabinets.

I'm a Florida designer/builder and what I find key to the article is true living space.  Of course this house would not be suitable for a large family nor is the intention to copy the whole renovation.

The integration of the light interior to the outside is excellent and the careful choice of good finishes (like the fireplace tile) creates a lovely elegance without being overstated.

I live in a small house as well, 1200 sq ft heated and cooled, open plan as well, and you wouldn't believe how many guests think it is a much larger house.

Think GREEN!

Excuse me but I am still waiting for some brainiac to fill in me on how much this "REALLY" cost to renovate.  When I hit the lottery and decide to have my "SMALL?" house remodeled, I'll call ya......what a joke!

In my experience, when you have to gut and yank the house and reset it on to a new foundation, you are no longer doing a simple remodel... It's a complete re-build.

Wow you all are vicious on the sq. footage issue.  Average homes in our area run 2500-3500 sq ft.  I guess it's just your perspective.  Our home is 3200 sq ft. and in 1996 cost us $95,000.  Over the years we have remodeled it and it would probably go for around 289,000 in today's market.  Three years ago I would have guessed around $360,000. I guess that's why everyone wants to live in N. Michigan!

I think a lot of people are missing the point. You look at a house like this and get "IDEAS" for your own home! My dad is buying a little spanish style house like this and I like the color choices. So I will pass along this article to him. Could he afford to do a remodel like this?, NO! but he can find an alternative! I do agree that 1500sq ft. is not small. I live in a 980 sq ft. 2 bed 1 bath and that's small!

my house is under 1000 square feet and this is bigger than the 3 bedroom ranch I grew up in and never thought of as small.  I stopped reading once I saw the square footage.  How about using an actual SMALL house next time...and be realistic in this economy...

What a sham of an article. Ever wonder why they never mention price in these ridiculous articles about a "little work and viola" nonsense? Try at least 200 thousand dollars especially the idiocy of rotating the house. I mean come on for God's sake. Yeah we all have the quarter million laying around and when we've got the time we just grab that quarter mil from the mad money jar, hire a crew and go luxuriate in a luxury spa for several months while they do this work.

AND by the way 1517 sq ft is not small.

How about some realistic articles next time.

We  need  to  understand  the  situation of  the  economy  right  now.

I  live  in  Arizona  and  things  aren't   pretty  here.  we   have  a  2  bedroom  house and  we  are  struggling  to  keep it  and  believe me  we  can't  even  afford

to  renovate  de  bathroom  right  now.

I  think  this magazines  are  made  for  wealthy  people  who  can  afford  this  kind   of  renovations....we  are  talking  two  different  worlds  rich  and  poor

no  more  middle  class...sorry.

The space in this house is nice, but the decor is fugly!  I live in SoCal in a 1200 sq. ft. house, which is average, not small!  They gutted that house and I am sure something nice could have been done with it.  I feel bad for the owners.

Hmmmm.  I didn't catch the price for this little project.  Since it's CA I'm guessing its around $600k.

Of course the house is beautiful, it's in Los Gatos!! Most people living there are not destitute. 1400 feet is not small it is reasonable and sufficient. Sunset is definitely a magazine for those who can afford....

This cracks me up.  1400 sq. feet is not small in CA.  Our house is a hacienda and is about 900 sq. feet.  The funny thing is that anyone who has the money to do something like this doesn't have to go on MSN for ideas.  They're hiring a squad.  Hehe.....   I think I agree with Watt Evers....I have to keep searchin' for the 'small home ideas on a budget' articles.

Seriously?!

Is this for real?  Since when is a 3 bedroom house small?  My house has a total of 5 rooms.  Guess I'll have to keep looking for some small house ideas...

1400 square feet is a "small house"?!!  WOW!! I grew up in a house that is 1365 SF, with SIX people and somehow, someway, we survived!!  I now live in the same house, but there's only four of us...STILL surviving, too!
