A great deal of mis-information exists in this article. Good to see at least 10 folks who are working to a goal of greater sustainability..

Thanks.

Footnote: If this article is presenting 'state of the art news' on landscaping, then why is a comment I wrote August 4 of last year still hanging around?

150 dollar mower (on it's 4th year), 15 bucks for gas and oil and 10 bucks for weed killer. It lives or it dies, because I've got better things to spend my money on.

Gas and oil?  If you have over a half acre of actual lawn, ok, but otherwise a cordless electric is the way to go.  Its lack of anything besides a charge will cause it to pay for itself in no time, plus it is quieter, cleaner, and can be stored in any position.

A half acre of lawn? That equates to nearly 400,000 gallons of water for irrigation each year (depending on local temperatures and rain). Enough for 10 swimming pools!

Why not eliminate some of the expanse of lawn?? Or, change the grass species to one (or more) that grow lower, slower, and do not require as much resource input (time, chemicals, and money)

Lawns are a 300 year old carryover from European elite who bragged their status by having huge estate lawns and scores of servants to care for them. Hopefully we have matured beyond that.

Nice information Ys Up!

Guess who planted this article?  You can grow a pretty decent lawn in many areas (those that reliably receive enough rainfall) with zero chemical fertilizer or weedkiller.  All you need is to mow your grass 3" high, so it overtops the weeds, and let the clippings lie.  They make perfectly good fertilizer.  And what is the alleged "horror" of using a hand mower?  It's great exercise, consumes zero fossil fuel and creates zero emissions, and is so quiet you can actually hear yourself sing, whistle or think while you're doing it.  There's a multibillion dollar lawn care industry out there convincing people they have to pump (collectively) millions of gallons of fertilizer and poisons into their nearest watershed, burn (collectively) millions of gallons of additional fossil fuel and add to global emissions.  How do you think people maintained their lawns before all these "great" new products were invented?  Do your body and your planet a favor and take care of your lawn the natural way.  And incidentally, did I mention cost, which was supposed to be the point of this article?  Over the past three years, I have spent $100 on my push mower, $15 for a replacement part, $15 to have the blades sharpened (which I could have done myself), $10 for a soil test kit, and $7.50 on grass seed.  I'm betting that's less than you spent on gas and oil (or electric current) for your mower over the same period.

I love how people think that a little lawn fertilizer kills everthing. When all it is is an amendment to the soil, as long as you only use the recomended amount it doesnt hurt nothing. Lots of people make accusations about fertilizer but never ever had first hand experience. So unless you have proof or experience with little lawn fertizer you should just keep your opinion to yourself. You just dont know any better.

I am surprised that it is not mentioned about the fertilizer run off and destruction of wildlife, both in the yard and water run off.  The cost is much higher and destructive.
