Enjoy a new way to make vineyards pay:
Here is a new kind of low cost tractor that could enable doubling the number of rows of vines without changing quality.
No longer is it necessary to let the standard tractor, or even the so called narrow tractors, limit productivity of vineyards.

Vineyard living — where you least expect it
By Roger Fillion of SwitchYard Media
Wine aficionados may dream of having a vineyard for a backyard.
Living among the vines, you could look out each day at your picturesque paradise. You could serve guests your own cuvée, made from your grapes. Who knows — you might even become the next Robert Mondavi.
Before you let your dreams get out of control, however, you should be aware of this: Tending a vineyard is a lot of work. Plus, you're at the mercy of Mother Nature.
Here are 10 vineyard properties for sale. Each includes a home — some have a winery, too — and is in a place not necessarily as known for its wine as are tourist spots such as California, Oregon and Washington state.
Note: All listing information is current as of April 13, 2012, publication date.
Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Texas Hill Country
Price: $9.8 million
About 50 miles northwest of San Antonio, near Comfort, this Texas Hill Country home has seven bedrooms, 7.5 baths, a gourmet kitchen, a library and a conference center on its 207 acres. The property, which abuts the Guadalupe River, also includes about 1,700 grape vines — with varietals such as merlot, negro amaro, tempranillo and viognier — and 50 olive trees. The property includes a not-yet-open winery and a functioning restaurant. You can park your horse in the barn.
Four guest cottages also let you entertain friends, family or paying guests.

Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Northern Montana
Price: $6.9 million
The vineyard on this Columbia Falls, Mont., property can produce 200 to 300 gallons of wine. If you need a break from tending the valiant and Kay Gray grapes, this home is just 18 miles from Glacier National Park, ski resorts and lakes.
Five Cape Cod-style homes dot the 275-acre property, called Rocking Horse Ranch. It's listed for $6.9 million. Together, the homes total 9,240 square feet. The largest, a two-bedroom house with a loft and two bathrooms, is 2,250 square feet.

Working Ohio winery
Price: $2.5 million
You can own what's billed as the first winery in northeastern Ohio's Mahoning County. Opened in 2005, the Mastropiétro Winery sits on 50 acres that were once a corn field. Frontenac, chambourcin and vidal blanc grapes are grown here.
The property has two parcels. One 37-acre parcel features a 2,352-square-foot farmhouse with three bedrooms and a bathroom. A 13-acre spread includes the winery, vineyard, outdoor event center and a 6,400-square-foot, Tuscan-style building with a tasting room, gift shop and banquet room.
The asking price of $2.5 million is negotiable. Because an oil-shale deposit is underneath the 50 acres, only the surface land is for sale — not the underlying mineral rights.

Among Utah's red rocks
Price: $795,000
The six-acre Spanish Valley Vineyards and Winery is in the heart of Utah's red-rock country, six miles south of Moab.
The property features five acres of vineyards, a winery, an orchard and a 1,500-square-foot house with three bedrooms and two baths. The house has a great room with a fireplace off the kitchen, plus a dining room.
The vineyard should be sprouting "beautiful green growth" by May, owner Stacy Dezelsky says. The licensed winery makes red and white wines. For R&R, you have two national parks and options for mountain biking, rafting and hiking at your doorstep.

North of the border

Enjoy island living in British Columbia while tending your two-acre hobby vineyard.
Silver Lining Farm and Vineyard, in the Vancouver Island town of Duncan, features a renovated 1904 home with five bedrooms, three bathrooms and a new garage. The house has 4,778 square feet and sits on 17.25 acres in the heart of Cowichan Valley wine country.
The vineyard includes vines from the Swiss Alps. The owner says the vineyard produces about three cases of pinot noir reserve and four cases of pinot noir each year.

Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Virginia plain
Price: $2.99 million
Lost Creek Winery, outside the northern Virginia town of Leesburg, isn't as old as Monticello, home to two vineyards of the nation's "greatest patron of wine and wine growing," Thomas Jefferson. But this 50-acre property does include 21 acres of grapes, a "Tuscan-style winery" with tasting and banquet rooms, and an outdoor pavilion.
It also has a four-bedroom, four-bathroom, Colonial home with more than 5,000 square feet. Park your wheels in a six-car garage, and chill in the hot tub after picking grapes.
Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Northern Arizona
Price: $2.3 million
Become a player in Arizona's growing wine business with this property in Cornville, about 15 miles west of Sedona.
The estate has a four-bedroom, five-bath house totaling 4,954 square feet. It has an indoor bar, outdoor bar, game room, home theater, pool, hot tub and barbecue. A one-acre vineyard is set to produce its first merlot crop this fall. The 3.61-acre property is next to a creek.
There's also an option to buy a boutique wine shop, The Art of Wine, at Sedona's Hyatt Piñon Pointe resort for $990,000. You can sell Arizona wines there, including perhaps your own label.

Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Colorado lifestyle
Price: $699,900
"Don't just buy a home. Buy a lifestyle!" That's how the listing of this 7.8-acre vineyard property in western Colorado's scenic Grand Valley describes Red Fox Vineyards.
Vines with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and tempranillo grapes occupy 6.5 acres. When you're not tending the grapes, you can bunk down in a remodeled three-bedroom, three-bath ranch house with a full kitchen. The home is 2,700 square feet.
The property abuts a conservation easement and is near the town of Palisade. Outside, you can entertain guests on the teak deck, prepare dinner in an outdoor kitchen and sip wine while taking in the nearby mountains and mesas. Peach and cherry trees dot the backyard.
There's room to install a winery to take the vineyard "to the next level," says owner Kathryn Stubler, who sells grapes to home winemakers and wineries.

Another Grand Valley vineyard
Price: $615,000
Maybe you're looking for a vineyard where you don't have to worry about taking care of a sizable home, too.
This seven-acre vineyard in western Colorado's Grand Valley sits in the heart of the state's wine region in Grand Junction. The property, listed for $615,000, features a two-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment with a kitchen and dining room. The apartment, roughly 800 square feet, is adjacent to a tasting room.
A 1,000-square-foot warehouse allows you to run a winery, too. There, you could crush the cabernet sauvignon, riesling and other grapes that grow in the vineyard. A tractor, sprayer and mower come with the property, in addition to netting to cover the grapes.

Vineyard living — where you least expect it
Texas meets Tuscany
Price: $7.4 million
Buy a slice of Italy in the upscale Dallas-Fort Worth suburb of Colleyville. The 4.5-acre estate comes with a small vineyard that you could use to make your own wine.
The seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home is "Tuscan-inspired." It totals more than 12,000 square feet and includes a game room, media room, study, wine cellar, sauna, pool and seven fireplaces. There's also a four-stall barn, above which you'll find a guest house with a kitchen and full bath.
The current owner planted a quarter-acre hobby vineyard, Briggs Freeman Sotheby's real-estate agent Jamie Adams says.
