Where open spaces make good neighbors
By Anne Marie Chaker of The Wall Street Journal
A surprising number homeowners are taking down the fences between neighboring properties in favor of bigger gardens and entertaining space outdoors.
This communal residential property was created by three couples in Santa Barbara, Calif. They hope it will serve them into retirement.

Built for multiple couples
The Santa Barbara compound is built on one-third of an acre in the downtown historic El Pueblo Viejo District, with space for four families.

Sharing the load
The three couples living here formed a condominium association -- a legal agreement signed by all six individuals governing maintenance and upkeep costs for common areas.

'Art walk'
The shared space at the compound includes 30 fruit trees, a vegetable garden, a casual seating area, a dining table with seating for 12 and an "art walk,' shown here.
This is a winding pathway that connects the homes and is surrounded by copper and ceramic artwork.

Forest in the big city
In the Brooklyn borough of New York, the owners of three brownstones took down fences and threaded a stone path through the leafy backyards that form a dense urban woodland.
This is the view from the deck of Bill Fidelo, one of the owners.

Three in one
A garden seating area is outside the door to Kimberly Williams' home in Brooklyn. Fidelo designed her garden and connected it to his own -- which also connects to the yard of a third neighbor, Ken Druse, a garden writer and photographer.

Room to grow
In Swarthmore, Pa., two neighbors established a communal vegetable garden-cum-hangout space in the backyard of Clair Oaks, at left. Carrie Wiles, right, and her partner, Andrew Bunting (not pictured), created the garden at the rear of the Oakses' property.

Working together
Wiles and Bunting stake a tomato plant in the garden. Wiles started talking about a vegetable garden and chicken coop last year, but the couple's property was filled with ornamental flower beds they didn't want to disturb. So they approached the Oakses.

'Secret garden'
Wiles displays turnips she and Bunting grew in their garden, which was completed a few weeks ago. The two couples call the place their "secret garden."

A place to share
Bunting says he envisions that both families will share meals at a table with benches that they plan to place in the center of the garden. The Swiss chard is among the vegetables growing there now.
